about

The third album from Ghost Flights moves into full-on opiated ambient drift, in which unsettling drones oscillate and pulse with the unwanted signals and disturbances of modern industrial life: static, noise and the feedback loop of grim news cycles.

Reference points here are the likes of Lussuria and Kevin Drumm; however, there is also a hint of Selected Ambient Works II – always in the background there is a sense of something awry or lost, the kind of unease created by lingering hallucinogenic alkaloids. Unlike these artists, there is less fog – in the mixing Ghost Flights achieves a digital clarity which renders the lysergic movements of the album more intense.

But, importantly, these are still songs: yes, they are generated by programmed randomness, but they have been carefully shaped and moulded into minor key ambient miniatures.

Otaku opens the album with shimmering organ drones and digital bells, before Grot and Fumes bring smeared white noise and spectral undertones. Timesick and Ghazals move us back into a glazed static drone zone, whilst Saltfish and Lines Floating Over A Coloured Haze reintroduce some harsh noise and feedback, pushing into territory inhabited by the likes of Wolf Eyes. It ends with Natural Numbers and a sense of optimism, a suspended organ tone heading off into the future.

61 minutes of hypnagogic, atmospheric ambience: this is the most accomplished Ghost Flights album yet.
